Annuncia la vincitrice della residenza 2022 al Museo delle Civiltà

La commissione di valutazione della Care in a World We Share with Others/Caring in a Precarious World ha individuato il progetto vincitore per la residenza, selezionato tra 180 candidature, arrivate da 48 nazioni. Il progetto vincitore, al quale verrà assegnato un grant del valore complessivo di 10.500 €, oltre alle coperture di viaggio e permanenza a Roma nell’autunno 2022, è PhonoMuseum of the Extincts, presentato da Wissal Houbabi, attivista femminista, artista e scrittrice.
La proposta di Wissal Houbabi, contraddistinta da una metodologia collettiva e processuale, verrà realizzata in collaborazione con un gruppo di lavoro formato da Suranga Katugampala (regista, autore e curatore visuale), Ismael “Astri” Lo (sound designer, artista, curatore audio), Kwanza Musi Dos Santos (attivista, consulente, poliglotta, dell’associazione culturale Questa è Roma), Toi Giordani (designer, poeta, performer, project designer, del collettivo Zoopalco di Bologna). Inoltre, il gruppo si avvarrà della collaborazione dell’associazione culturale Questa è Roma, del collettivo Zoopalco di Bologna, e del partenariato con il Centro Studi Post Coloniali e di Genere – UniOr di Napoli.
Il progetto PhonoMuseum of the Extincts risponde pienamente alle prospettive teoriche e metodologiche delineate dalla call e costituisce un importante contributo all’analisi critica delle collezioni museali, delle loro denominazioni, delle modalità di allestimento, e del loro ripensamento da una prospettiva futura, che colloca il museo nell’ipotetico anno 2152.
La commissione ha deciso inoltre di assegnare due grant di 5.000 € ad altri due progetti, attribuendo due menzioni speciali a Bianca Baldi per il progetto Sicomoro Centenario, e a Malak Yacout, per la proposta Expanded Memory. Le due menzioni permetteranno ai due vincitori di avviare due percorsi di ricerca a partire dall’esplorazione delle collezioni del Museo delle Civiltà.
La residenza 2022 Care in a World We Share with Others/Caring in a Precarious World è organizzata nell’ambito del progetto europeo Taking Care – Ethnographic and World Cultures Museums as Spaces of Care che esplora le connessioni tra le collezioni etnografiche conservate nei musei europei e le più ampie tematiche correlate alla crisi climatica e all’Antropocene, affrontando questioni collegate al colonialismo e alle sue conseguenze sul piano sociale e ambientale (https://takingcareproject.eu/). Il Museo delle Civiltà di Roma è il partner italiano del progetto europeo, coordinato dal Weltmuseum Wien, co-finanziato dal Programma Creative Europe dell’Unione Europea (https://www.museodellecivilta.it/taking-care/).
La commissione di valutazione è stata composta da Rosa Anna Di Lella (funzionaria demoetnoantropologa, Museo delle Civiltà), Viviana Gravano (curatrice di arte contemporanea e docente all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera – Milano), Matteo Lucchetti (curatore per le arti e culture contemporanee, Museo delle Civiltà), Fiamma Montezemolo (artista e professoressa di Cinema e Digital Media all’University of California), Igiaba Scego (scrittrice).

European Project Taking Care
announces the winner of the 2022 Residency at the Museo delle Civiltà
The evaluation committee for the Call for Applications Care in a World We Share with Others/Caring in a Precarious World has selected the winning project for the residency among 180 applications submitted from 48 countries.
The winning project, which will be awarded a grant of a total amount of euro 10.500, as well as coverage for travel and accommodation in Rome in autumn 2022, is PhonoMuseum of the Extincts proposed by Wissal Houbabi, feminist and activist, artist and writer.
Wissal Houbabi’s proposal, characterised by a collective and process-based methodology, will be realised in cooperation with a working group formed by Suranga Katugampala (director, author and visual curator), Ismael “Astri” Lo (sound designer, artist, audio curator), Kwanza Musi Dos Santos (activist, consultant, polyglot, Questa è Roma association President), Toi Giordani (designer, poet, performer, project designer – Collettivo Zoopalco of Bologna). Furthermore, the project will be carried out in collaboration with the cultural association Questa è Roma, the Collettivo Zoopalco of Bologna, and in partnership with the Centro Studi Post Coloniali e di Genere – UniOr of Naples.
The project PhonoMuseum of the Extincts fully responds to the theoretical and methodological perspectives outlined by the call and brings an important contribution to the critical analysis of museum collections, their denominations, methods of presentation, and their rethinking from a future perspective which sets the museum in a hypothetical 2152.
The commission has also decided to award two grants of euro 5.000 to two other projects, giving two special mentions to Bianca Baldi for the project Sicomoro Centenario and to Malak Yacout for the proposal Expanded Memory. The two mentions will allow the two winners to start a dialogue with the museum, and initiate research projects starting from the exploration of the collections.
The 2022 residency Care in a World We Share with Others/Caring in a Precarious World is organised within the framework of the European Project Taking Care – Ethnographic and World Cultures Museums as Spaces of Care, which explores the connections between ethnographic collections held in European museums and broader issues related to the climate crisis and the Anthropocene, addressing issues related to colonialism and its social and environmental consequences (https://takingcareproject.eu/). The Museo delle Civiltà in Rome is the Italian partner of the European project, coordinated by the Weltmuseum Wien, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union (https://www.museodellecivilta.it/taking-care/).
The evaluation committee was composed by Rosa Anna Di Lella (cultural anthropologist, Museo delle Civiltà), Viviana Gravano (curator of contemporary art and professor at the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Brera – Milan), Matteo Lucchetti (curator for contemporary arts and cultures, Museo delle Civiltà), Fiamma Montezemolo (artist and professor of Cinema and Digital Media at the University of California), Igiaba Scego (writer).
